The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 mandates that all Medicare Part B suppliers, including pharmacists, must meet new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality standards to maintain supplier billing numbers. Ten organizations have been selected by CMS to accredit suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS). The Act also calls for competitive bidding of DMEPOS beginning in 2007. Only accredited suppliers are eligible to submit bids to supply DMEPOS to Medicare beneficiaries.
