Doctors Zero in on Benefit Gaps Allowed Under Health Reform

Concerns are being voiced that the minimum health package that must be designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) might not provide sufficient drug coverage or enough coverage for children. HHS had proposed allowing states to chose a current in-state plan to serve as a benchmark, but some do not cover care deemed medically necessary for children. The proposed prescription drug plan also provides insufficient coverage, as it would only cover one prescription medication per drug class. Other provisions have raised concerns, including whether HHS would allow states to set as a benchmark a plan that would be more extensive than a typical small-group plan causing costs for that plan to be higher than what an individual or small business could afford.
