The twenty-six states that have challenged the healthcare overhaul recently filed a Supreme Court brief alleging that the healthcare law is trying to force states to expand their Medicaid programs unconstitutionally. Congress told states to expand or risk losing federal funding, and the states don't have any real alternatives but to do so. A brief on the Medicaid issue is expected from the administration in February, while the main brief, from Jan. 6, argued that Congress did not overstep its constitutionally mandated authority when it required Americans to buy insurance by 2014. The Supreme Court has planned to hear verbal arguments between March 26 and 28 and expects to issue a ruling on the topic by the end of June.
