A New York senator is calling for steps to be taken to prevent deadly pharmacy robberies like one that took place in Long Island over the weekend, which claimed the life of an off-duty federal agent who tried to intervene. Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for the Drug Enforcement Agency to create guidelines to help pharmacies protect their medications. Those guidelines would call for the use of silent alarms, timed safes and bullet proof glass. Additionally, Schumer wants the agency to share information on pharmaceutical crime with local law enforcement. Finally, Schumer is seeking to increase the maximum sentence for robbing a drugstore to 20 years per offense.
