Barred Hospice Doctor’s Narcotics Orders Refused by Pharmacists

Over a dozen pharmacists in the Pittsburgh area decided amongst themselves to stop filling prescriptions written by a local doctor. The decision was prompted by what the pharmacists referred to as prescriptions for 'outrageous' amounts of narcotic drugs including Oxycontin, Percocet, Oxyfast, and Roxanol. The doctor is currently the subject of an ongoing investigation by the U.S. DEA, FBI, and the Pennsylvania attorney general's office, and has been served with a suspension order that forbids him to prescribe any controlled substances. New rules for opioid narcotics have been proposed by the FDA which would require doctors and nurses to have special training, and manufacturers to distribute educational materials with opioid narcotics. A planned registry to track those prescribing these drugs and those using them was dropped after opposition form the hospice and pain-management industries.
