Genentech Warns of Fake Avastin Cancer Drug

Los Angeles Times (CA) (02/15/12)
Genentech has issued warnings to doctors and patients that there are counterfeit vials of the cancer drug Avastin in the U.S that were likely made abroad and imported into the states, as Genentech was alerted to their existence by foreign health regulators. The company does not know how much is in circulation or where it might be concentrated, but is working with the FDA to track down these vials and analyze them. The counterfeit vials do not contain the active ingredient, and do not have "Genentech" printed on the label. The company notes that legitimate Avastin has a six-digit lot number with not numbers and has indicated that Avastin with the lot numbers B86017, B6011, and B6010 might be fake. The FDA has been in contact with practices that might have gotten unapproved drugs, as well as the counterfeit Avastin from a company called Quality Specialty Products, which might also go by Montana Health Care Solutions.
