FDA OKs Drug to Eliminate Chemotherapy Side Effect

The FDA has approved a new drug from BTG International Inc. that helps reduces the amounts of a chemotherapy drug that remains in the bodies of cancer patients. Voraxaze causes the chemotherapy drug methotrexate to break apart, enabling the body to expel it, preventing the harmful effects that occur when it accumulates in the body. The harmful effects include rashes in the intestines and damage to intestines, kidneys, and the liver. According to a study, patients who took Voraxaze were able to expel 95 percent of the methotrexate that had accumulated in their systems, and the drug's main side effects were nausea, vomiting, and low blood pressure.
