The growing number of babies born addicted to oxycodone and other opioids underscores the depth of the epidemic of addiction to prescription painkillers in the U.S. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association earlier this year noted that the number of infants who displayed opioid withdrawal symptoms increased threefold between 2000 and 2009 to reach more than 13,000. However, many hospitals are not equipped to deal with this growing problem because there is very little research available on effective ways of treating opioid withdrawal in newborns. As a result, doctors and nurses have been forced to try various combinations and dosages of drugs in order to find an effective treatment.
