The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(K) clearance to Ethicon Endo-Surgery's HARMONIC ACE Shears With Adaptive Tissue Technology. The shears are designed to respond to changes in tissue conditions by regulating energy delivery and by making changes to the generator tone that the surgeon can hear. The presence of these features mean that the shears, which can be used for dissection, sealing, transection, and other functions, display 23 percent less thermal spread while simultaneously reducing transection times by 21 percent, compared with the thermal spread and transection times that have been seen when using the current HARMONIC ACE. In addition to the adaptive tissue technology features, the latest version of HARMONIC ACE also features a tapered, coated blade that allows it to perform grasping and dissection with precision.
