Pfizer has announced that its new rheumatoid arthritis treatment tofacitinib is more effective than its old treatment, methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall), and poses no new side-effects over the older treatment. The large-scale study, which consisted of human testing, found that tofacitinib did a better job than methotrexate at easing joint pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis -- a chronic disorder that affects 1.3 million Americans and 23.7 million people globally.
