The Journal of Food Science has published a study that may have implications for the bone health of women who have passed through menopause. The study found that supplementing the diets of lab rats with the prebiotic fibers Synergy1, Fruitafit HD, or polydextrose resulted in a 20% increase in magnesium absorption and a 23% increase in magnesium retention. Researchers also found that the rats that were given polydextrose had higher calcium absorption efficiency and retention than the other groups of rats after several days, though no difference was seen after four weeks of feeding, while both Synergy1 and Fruitafit HD had a positive impact on calcium metabolism related to changes in the gut.
