Counseling Patients on the Use of Pancreatic Exocrine Insuffiency (PEI) Drug Products: An Update
Pancreatic extract drug products are indicated in the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a potential complicating factor in cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, or pancreatectomy. The safe and effective use of pancreatic enzyme drug products requires standardized enzyme activity and consistent drug therapy. The pharmacist must be aware of risks in generic substitution and therapeutic interchange to properly counsel patients and work with other members of the healthcare team.

Understanding ADHD Care for Children: HEDIS® and Beyond
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the more common chronic conditions of childhood. Children with ADHD may experience significant functional problems such as school difficulties, academic underachievement, troublesome relationships with family members and peers, and behavioral problems. To drive care improvement in ADHD and reinforce the use of clinical guidelines and recommendations for disease management to improve patient outcomes and reduce the overall clinical and economic burden, NCQA developed and approved a HEDIS 2006 performance measure that assesses appropriate follow-up care for children prescribed an ADHD medication. First year reports for that measure are now available, and point toward a need for significant improvement.

The Safety of COX-2 Pharmacotherapy for Patients in Pain
There are anecdotal reports about the COX-2 inhibitors of improved efficacy
over the traditional NSAIDs. This program will help the practitioner identify those patients with specific risk factors, in whom the risks would outweigh potential benefits, and properly educate those for whom COX-2 use is still an option.

Emerging Trends in HIV Combination Therapy: The Pharmacology and the Pharmacist
Because of their unique accessibility and extensive knowledge about medications, pharmacists fulfill a major role in ensuring that patients with HIV/AIDS understand and properly take their medicines, non-compliance with therapeutic regimens remains a particularly significant challenge in this patient population. Pharmacists are in an excellent position to provide compliance counseling at the point-of-care, as well as to monitor continued compliance over time, including, if necessary, notifying prescribers about potential therapy problems.

Common Misconceptions with Bioequivalence and Interchangeability
This CE program examines the bioequivalence and interchangeability of drugs. Since several factors can influence the bioavailability of drugs, this activity highlights instances where sub-therapeutic responses, alterations in outcomes, or adverse events can be consequences of pharmacokinetic interactions.
This program is co-sponsored by ArcMesa Educators and Scinexa, LLC.

AAFP Case Study: COPD: Putting Guidelines into Practice
Research has shown that the diagnosis and treatment of COPD can be improved in primary care. A recent study in the journal Preventive Medicine (March 2005) concluded that although primary care providers manage asthma patients using asthma guidelines, a great proportion of COPD patients are under-treated, mainly in the primary stages of the disease. The study concluded that there is a need for better implementation of COPD guidelines by primary care providers and a need for COPD to be diagnosed in its early stages.
