The Health Professional's Role in Formulary Management of Medicare Part D Benefits

Starting January 1, 2006, pharmacists began to experience a multitude of new challenges associated with the new Medicare prescription drug benefit. One of the most time-consuming challenges in the program will be formulary management. Preparation will be key for pharmacists to minimize the economic and humanitarian impact of confused beneficiaries and to limit any delays in care due to this new program.

Bioequivalence, Therapeutic Equivalence, & Clinical Case Management in Thyroid Disease
Studies consistently show that as many as 40% of patients with hypo- or hyper-thyroidism are not well managed by physicians. These studies each used thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) as the clinical marker of thyroid dysfunction. Studies have also shown that the clinical consequences of abnormal TSH levels include cardiovascular and lipid risks; miscarriage, fetal death and lower IQs; and particular risks for patients with cancer.

aka: "Help! The Sky is Really Falling"

This timely program will provide pharmacists with the tools they need to survive the first six months of Medicare. Additionally, it will highlight areas of professional and business opportunities to make the best of the new Medicare benefit for 2006 and beyond.

Strategies in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Events and Mortality in the High-Risk Older Population
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a substantial US healthcare burden, with about 40% of all US deaths annually as a result of cardiovascular events. Current initiatives examine not only pharmacologic treatment, but also lifestyle changes that are focused on the prevention of CVD in the elderly.
This program is supported through an educational grant from Wyeth and King Pharmaceuticals.

Motion Sickness: Review of Preventative Remedies
Motion sickness arises when the brain receives conflicting signals from sensory organs about the body's orientation. Almost everyone will develop motion sickness symptoms if exposed to sufficiently violent movements. It is important for pharmacists to become familiar with the effective prescription and non-prescription treatments available to prevent its symptoms.
