aka: "Help! The Sky is Really Falling"


At the beginning of 2006, pharmacists can expect a multitude of new challenges associated with the new Medicare benefit. Tighter formularies, prior authorization requirements, and true-out-of-pocket cost monitoring could become a time-consuming way of life for many community pharmacies.

Preparation will be key to minimizing the economic and humanitarian impact of confused beneficiaries, and to limit any delays in care due to this new program. This timely program will provide pharmacists with the tools they need to survive the first six months of Medicare. Additionally, it will highlight areas of professional and business opportunities to make the best of the new Medicare benefit for 2006 and beyond.

The goal of this continuing education activity is to provide pharmacists with an overview of the current understanding of dyslipidemia, its epidemiology and etiology, diagnosis, and various approaches to pharmacological management.

On December 8, 2003, President George W. Bush signed into law the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003. It creates a new Part D, which establishes a prescription drug benefit for people with Medicare. This continuing education program will delve into key points related to implementation of this change in Medicare coverage.

Nonprescription OTC Drug Therapy: A Business and Professional Opportunity
This activity will focus on over-the-counter (OTC) drug therapy, its growing place in managing illness in the U.S., and the pharmacist's strategic role in fostering safe, appropriate and effective OTC drug therapies while increasing profitability.
